Water

Most Common Type

Water is the most common Pokemon type in the National Pokédex, followed by Normal and Grass. Bug is the fourth most common despite being relatively weak competitively.

Ice

Worst Defensive Type

Ice-type is widely considered the worst defensively — weak to Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel while only resisting Ice itself. Powerful offensively but fragile to defend.

📖 About Pokemon Types

All 18 Pokemon Types Explained

Pokemon types form the foundation of the battle system. Introduced in Generation 1 with 15 types, the system expanded to 17 with Dark and Steel in Gen 2, and reached its current count of 18 with the introduction of Fairy type in Generation 6 (Pokemon X and Y).

Each type has a set of strengths (super effective against), weaknesses (weak to), resistances (resists), and immunities (completely immune). Understanding the type chart is the most fundamental skill in competitive Pokemon.

Best Dual Type Combinations

Steel/Water (Empoleon) is one of the best defensive combinations — Water covers Steel's fire weakness, while Steel covers Water's Electric and Grass weaknesses. The result is a type with 10 resistances and only 2 weaknesses (Fighting and Ground).

Dragon/Steel (Dialga) was the most defensively sound type in Gen 4 and 5, immune to Poison and Dragon, resistant to 10 types, and only weak to Fighting and Ground before Fairy type existed.

Water/Ground (Swampert) is one of the best offensive combinations — together they cover 9 of 18 types super effectively. Swampert's single weakness to Grass is easy to play around.

Ghost/Dark has no weaknesses in terms of type immunities — Ghost is immune to Normal and Fighting, while Dark is immune to Psychic. This combination is only weak to Fairy and Bug.

Rarest Pokemon Type Combinations

Some type combinations are extremely rare or entirely absent from the official Pokédex, making them prime candidates for fan game Pokemon designs. Normal/Ghost is essentially unused as a pure combination. Bug/Dragon has only Flygon as a near-miss (Dragon/Ground, not Bug). Electric/Psychic and Ice/Normal are other combinations with very limited official representation.

Our type randomizer can generate any of the 171 combinations, including the rare ones — which makes it especially useful for fan game designers looking for an unexplored type niche.

Using the Type Randomizer for Fan Games

Fan game creators often use type randomizers to find underutilised type combinations for original Pokemon. Once you have a type combination, you can use our Pokemon Name Generator with the matching type filter to get a name that fits the type identity, and our Random Pokemon Generator to find existing Pokemon with similar typing as inspiration for stat spread and design direction.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

With 18 Pokemon types, there are 171 possible dual-type combinations plus 18 single-type options — 189 total. Not all of these exist in official Pokemon. Many rare combinations like Bug/Dragon and Electric/Psychic have very few or no official representatives.
Defensively, Steel/Water (Empoleon) and Dragon/Steel (Dialga) are among the strongest — both have 10+ resistances and minimal weaknesses. Offensively, Water/Ground and Fire/Flying cover an enormous spread of the type chart super effectively.
Ice/Normal, Normal/Ghost, Bug/Dragon, and Electric/Psychic are among the rarest dual-type combinations in the official Pokédex. Ice is also the least common pure single type in terms of the total number of Pokemon.
Fairy type was introduced in Generation 6 with Pokemon X and Y (2013). It was added specifically to balance the Dragon type, which was extremely dominant in competitive play at the time. Fairy is immune to Dragon and super effective against it.
No single type has zero weaknesses. However, Normal/Ghost would have no weaknesses if it existed as a combination — Normal is immune to Ghost, and Ghost is immune to Normal and Fighting. Eelektross (Pure Electric + Levitate ability) is the only Pokemon in official games with no weaknesses.
